Classified Report: Bergdahl Had Walked Away from Base Before
Bowe Bergdahl’s 2009 disappearance wasn’t the first time he had walked away from his assigned area before, according to a classified military investigation.
The New York Timesreports that a classified military report compiled two months after Bergdahl was kidnapped by the Taliban found that Bergdahl had left twice before: once during redeployment exercises in California, and another time from his outpost in Afghanistan. The investigators spoke with members of Bergdahl’s unit.
The first time he walked away from his outpost in Afghanistan was an “unauthorized walk” that was not reported to higher-level officials, platoon mates say in the report, according to the newspaper. The Military Timesreports that Bergdahl may have done it more than once.
The classified report does not say whether Bergdahl meant to leave for good on his last walk, but does conclude that he most likely left on his own free will.
