Sen. Bob Casey (D., Pa.) is the only other Democratic sponsor of the abortion amendment being proposed by Sen. Ben Nelson (D., Neb.). Turn on C-SPAN 2 now to see the final hour of debate on the measure. Will Casey continue to fight for pro-life issues in the health-care bill if the amendment fails today? Doubtful.
But unlike Nelson, Casey said he will not vote to block consideration of the overall health care legislation if it fails to include the abortion restrictions.
”Even on the public option, even on other issues that are very important, like abortion, I am trying not to draw any lines in the sand because I want to get a bill passed,” Casey said.
That said, Casey insisted he is a strong supporter of Nelson’s amendment.
”I think it’s important that the Senate have a vote on what I believe is a consensus, not only among legislators but among the people, that we shouldn’t have public dollars pay for abortion,” Casey said.
