WIth this report , Robert Novak is fueling speculation that President Bush could turn to a current or past Senator if there is another Supreme Court retirement before he leaves office. The last time around, incoming Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) green-lighted several GOP Senators as among those who could receive easy confirmation to the High Court.
If Bush goes this route, among those who could get serious consideration is Ohio’s recently ousted Senator Mike DeWine. According to Novak:
DeWine’s moderate record in the Senate could upset some conservatives, but his adherence to the pro-life line would still probably prevent another Harriet Miers situation. Miers’ nomination was withdrawn in 2005 after conservatives went into rebellion against Bush over her lack of a record and qualifications, and over fears about her position on abortion.
