Senator Leahy, the lead Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has announced that, notwithstanding his many reservations, he will vote to confirm John Roberts for chief justice. This announcement contrasts with his blistering statement last month about Roberts’s record as a Reagan administration lawyer.
Leahy says that his “conscience” tells him to vote yes. Apparently his conscience is finely tuned on how best to position him to oppose the next nomination.
I give up on any effort to predict how other Democrats will vote.
