From Watchdog.org:
A new report by the John K. MacIver Institute for Public Policy shows that more than seventy five percent of Milwaukee’s K-12 students actually exercise some form of educational choice every year.
“Critics have characterized School Choice as a temporary experiment, one that should be feared by parents and the public,” said MacIver President Brett Healy. “Our research shows that in fact school choice in the broadest sense — parents rejecting the arbitrarily assigned neighborhood public school for a different school — is a fundamental part of Milwaukee’s educational landscape.”
The MacIver Educational Choice Census reveals that 87,191 of the 115,022 Milwaukee school children are educated in a place other than their traditional, geographically-assigned public school.
I live here. No kid goes to his local school due to busing (aka desegregation) unless they 'choose' to do so. The best part of "choice" is the voucher system, but that is limited to very - very few families. Going off of memory here, but something like only 40% of MPS freshman will graduate, and of those, about half must take remedial reading courses IF they decide to go to college. It's disgusting.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI think the only ones that really need fear this experiment are the adminstrators and teachers of the public school sytem that continue to produce an inferior product. I realize that all of the blame should not rest with the teachers and administrators but a High School diploma should mean more than a document that indicates at least twelve years of attendance. Allowing students and parents freedom to choose the best school is a giant step in the right direction for a better educational system.
