What Women Want

by Jane S. Shaw

David, I don’t know if it’s a healthy lifestyle or not, although it doesn’t look that way. I can offer some history to help explain it. In the early days of modern feminism,  Robert Townsend wrote a “Guerilla Guide” for women trying to move up in the world (that was about 40 years ago, even before the term “glass ceiling” was in vogue).

Two pieces of Townsend’s advice stand out in my memory. One was that women should use their twenties as a time to try out a variety of different jobs. The other was that women should get serious about work: “Men are a dime a dozen, but a good job is hard to find.”
