College As Culture Transmitter or Culture Transformer?

Peter Wood, president of the National Association of Scholars, joins Andy Nash for the latest installment of the weekly Web program InsideAcademia.tv. Their quarter-hour conversation begins with the history and aims of NAS concerning political correctness and a classroom free of political agenda.

Nash and Wood then delve into the historical causes of the radicalization of the American college, with Wood citing the 1962 “Port Huron Statement of the Students for a Democratic Society” as the key turning point in the shift from the campus as a center of free inquiry and civilizational preserver to the campus as culture transformer concerned with radicalizing social institutions toward the goal of an ever more perfect society.
