No Price Too High for White Guilt

Katherine Kersten reports on developments in education in the Twin Cities Area. Authorities in one district are cutting $7 million from the budget and laying off 94 teachers but are sending a delegation of pedagogues to the ninth annual “White Privilege Conference,” which starts today and ends April 16. This will cost the district $160 a day for each teacher plus $125 a day for the substitutes who will handle their classes while they are away, learning ”how white privilege, white supremacy, and oppression affects daily life.” Other cash-strapped districts will also be sending delegations. The keynote speaker will be Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, author of Outlaw Woman, who speaks on capitalism and imperialism, was evidently part of the Venceremos Brigade in Cuba, and has kept up her contacts with revolutionaries of all stripes. Last year’s speaker recommended looking to Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela for “exciting progressive developments.” The sponsors of this educational event include the University of Minnesota, MnSCU, the St. Paul Foundation, Hamline University, Gustavus Adolphus College, the YWCA of Minneapolis, and Augsburg College, among others.

Some have speculated that the college “bubble” is about to burst or deflate, possibly necessitating cuts in the noxious frills involved in so-called “diversity.” But as the headline of Kersten’s piece suggests, “Always room in the budget for white guilt.”

I'm white, I don't feel especially privileged or supreme, and I'm not oppressing anybody.

I feel really left out!

They should have arranged to have their meeting next door in Des Moines, Iowa, to coincide with the Iowa State Fair in August. They could've saved the cost of the substitute teachers, gotten better hotel rates, met some presidential wannabes, enjoyed porkchops on a stick, and taken in the annual "Beat Whitey Night."

Last year's "Beat Whitey Night" was only moderately successful, achieving a number of injuries but no fatalities. The Des Moines police are trying to figure out whether the attacks were racially motivated, according to Des Moines' WHO-TV. (Google it.)

If the MSM reported honestly about black behavior in America the Left's grand "celebrate diversity" narrative would instantaneously go up in smoke. Perhaps that is why the MSM suppresses incidents such as Beat Whitey Night. That may also explain the education establishment's shrill and laughable "white privilege" rhetoric.

My white privilege:
I was born to a poor, white, unremarkably unpleasant childhood. No one told me how white privilege works. So I experienced the shame of being a welfare and food stamp consumer, the shame of having one parent irresponsible and the other unknown, the shame of wearing the same dirty clothes because that’s all I had, the insecurity of not knowing how long the current roof would be over my head or where the next one would be, the being grateful for handouts but ashamed that I needed them.

I didn’t know that all I had to do was whip out my white privilege card and make all that shame go away. I thought I’d have to work for it. Maybe that was my real white privilege; the knowing that no one was going to lower any bars for me, and that I’d better expect to earn my way rather than feeling entitled to it.

At age 18, my sole assets were my brains, my body, and a large account of white privilege which bought me an enlistment (the US military is notorious for favoring white privilege). Of course I was awarded the excellent ratings and promotions to which my white privilege entitled me; my supervisors would have been afraid to stop praising and promoting me lest I accuse them of not respecting my white privilege.

My white privilege was so powerful that it got me awarded a college degree and an advanced degree both while I was on active duty; and of course my GPA was stellar on account of professors’ being loath to downgrade one so imbued with white privilege as I. Then, midcareer, the powers that be were clamoring for more white officers so they tracked me down, had someone help me through the application process and sent off to become an officer.

White privilege didn’t let me down in that status either; it got me awards, excellent ratings, and promotions. When I served in combat it was with units that were overwhelmingly white. In Iraq the unit I was with had such a concentration of white privilege, that we daily engaged in arguably the most important combat operations going on at the time (sarcasm aside, that was a privilege).

After over two decades’ of sitting back collecting what was due to me as a privileged white guy in the military, I retired from that and found my white privilege in great demand in the job market. Employers want my white privilege so much that they hire me rather than waiting to fill the position with someone whose darker skin color makes them more qualified for winning government contracts.

Last year I had the white privilege of paying taxes about equal to what the median income is in my neighborhood. At the grocery store I have the privilege of paying with money I earned. But since I don’t live in wealthy area, I regularly see people in line at the grocery store who have to put up with the shame of paying with other peoples’ money, the food stamp card. These people are disproportionately lacking in white privilege although plenty do have white privilege but apparently don’t know how to use it. Oddly enough, most of them look able bodied and don’t have any mental handicaps that show (unless you count neck tattoos and the like).

Yea, White Privilege Conferences for public school teachers… one of many reasons why my not-entirely white children are home-schooled.

Now, I know that a lot of hard leftists read NRO. Some even comment. So, I'm talking to you, wannabe Maos:

If you would like about 20% of NRO's core to get on your side, and abandon all that stuff about free markets and values and whatever, then all you have to do is sponsor conferences on "leftists with guns." After all, just about any leftist who's anybody had a gun, and many are photographed proudly holding one.

Then you'll be able to say, "Sure we still pander white guilt. Sure we want to take your property. Sure we know that we're an intellectually elite class whom you dare not contradict. But check out the action on that automatic weapon our fearless leader is holding!"

Look, the "Jesus was Marx lite" theme already works for many of the religiously inclined. Trouble is, he didn't pack heat (might have had a different ending to the story, if he did).

As an Independent who votes Democratic (Environmental concerns) I like a lot of the comments. Some, not so much. At any rate, this is my first comprehensive reading of this site, and I really thought this conference was lifted from The Onion.

Seriously, though, I think most Americans are tired of being lied to by our government. We must wean ourselves from an out of control welfare state, allow motivated immigrants to enhance our intellectual and labor pool by becoming English speaking legal citizens, responsibly conserve our natural resources and allow everyone unfettered access to the means to excel.

We are much better than the screaming idiots on the fringes of either party.
