A law school at a North Carolina public university turned down a grant to found a prestige-enhancing scholarly center because the faculty didn’t want to take the donor’s money, since he is widely known for his liberal politics.
Yeah, right. I’m being silly, of course. The faculty actually caused a stink because the donor was Art Pope, who’s renowned or infamous, depending on your inclinations, for his support of Republican, conservative, and libertarian organizations and individuals — and who’s also the Pope Center for Higher Education Policy’s main benefactor. Had North Carolina Central University been offered $600,000 (just for starters) for a state constitutional center by a liberal organization, the school would have sucked up every last cent and begged for more. In today’s Pope Center article, Jane Shaw describes this triumph of ideology over scholarship.
