An article tells of recent developments in pedagogical thinking in which character is seen as important in the student’s ability to succeed. Instead of letting each child make his own rules and decide for himself what is best, the school will actually try to inculcate the importance of certain character traits, such as self-control, optimism, curiosity, gratitude, and something they call “grit.” Educators are discovering that the “school as fun” approach can go only so far, since learning is often arduous, exhausting, and discouraging, so they are returning again to the importance of character, especially for kids from underprivileged backgrounds. The Gods of the copybook headings return.
