StraighterLine to Offer ‘Critical Thinking’ Test

by George Leef

The Chronicle’s Jeff Selingo writes about StraighterLine’s move to offer the Collegiate Learning Assessment, which assesses critical-thinking ability, to individuals.

Naturally, there are nay-sayers finding fault with the idea, but even if the test is not perfect or even close to perfect, it would still tell people (particularly employers) more about an individual’s mental capacity than mere possession of  BA. Given the fact that the latter often betokens nothing more than sufficient perseverance to enroll in and pass enough courses of minimal intellectual value, the availability of a much less expensive means of demonstrating trainability could be huge.
