Ripple Effect

The Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Christian Legal Society v. Martinez was pretty amazing. It allowed universities to prohibit campus organizations from excluding people who violate the beliefs of the organization. We are beginning to see universities move in that direction, by considering an “all-comers” policy. Under this policy, college Democrats will be required to accept  Republican members and Muslim clubs will be required to accept Christian members, even if those members do not accept the organization’s values. Clearly, the impact will be to damage or destroy religious assembly. UNC–Chapel Hill student Anthony Dent explains that his school may be moving in that direction, and FIRE’s Robert Shibley discusses the debate at Vanderbilt University on NRO.
