A College-Completion Crusade

While it is becoming evident to more and more people every day that the U.S. has oversold higher education, the Lumina Foundation keeps cheerleading for a higher college-completion rate. Read Inside Higher Ed’s story about it here.

Lumina’s obsession with getting at least a particular percentage of Americans through to postsecondary degrees is the mindset of central planning — expert decisionmakers setting targets that will be best of society. The fact that “we” are “falling short” proves to the people at Lumina that we have a problem. Apparently it does not occur to them that individuals decide for themselves what level of formal education is ideal, and that many simply don’t think additional courses and degrees are worth the expense.
