High Self-Esteem: Part of the Problem

Hans Bader of the Competitive Enterprise Institute writes here about the disturbing fact that many young Americans go through school getting heaps of praise, leading to mistaken notions about their actual abilities. Consequently, many enter college with overly inflated self-esteem and expect that they’ll receive grades commensurate with their supposed worth. Because it’s easier to cave in, faculty members tend to inflate their grades and lower academic expectations.
