In today’s Pope Center piece, Jay Schalin writes about the new James B. Hunt Library on the NC State campus. The library cost a lot, wastes loads of space, and was of doubtful need. A point Jay didn’t include was that the “need” to build a new library was based on a UNC system rule that there must be room in the library for 20 percent of the student body. That rule might have made some sense 50 years ago, but many students today never go near the library.
Famous politicians often get the taxpayers to foot the bill for monuments to themselves, and this is a good example.
