Is a ‘Remedial’ Class Really a Remedy?


Can a one- or two-semester remedial course bring unprepared freshmen up to par? On the Pope Center site, George Leef offers a way to test whether remedial programs are doing their job: After completing the course, students should re-take the test that revealed their lack of proficiency. George suspects that few remedial classes can make up for years of poor education, but a lot of resources are being wasted on the theory that they can.
