Scholarships for Undocumented Students

An outfit called Chicano Organizing and Research in Education (CORE) is offering scholarships to illegal aliens.  From an e-mail sent to CUNY’s Central Office:

CORE (Chicano Organizing & Research in Education) is pleased to announce its first annual “Que Llueva Café” scholarship. Applicants must be undocumented, Chicano/Latino high school students entering college this fall. The postmark deadline is April 10, 2009.

It’s an interesting chain of communication.  CORE sent the e-mail to a segment of CUNY administration called “At Home in College,” who sent it to someone at CUNY’s Central Office, where someone who is part of a section titled CUNY College Now–Outreach Planning Group sent it on to the College Now listserv with the subject line ”Scholarship Opportunity for Undocumented Students.” No one seemed to think it odd and to ask questions, such as who is funding these scholarships and whether they may be against the law.
