The Right take on higher education.

More on “Dumbing Down the UC”

I was glad to see John’s posting earlier today, regarding the proposal that the University of California lower its admission standards.  There’s an additional twist here that worth noting, with regard to getting rid of the SAT II as part of the admissions process.  This move is designed to improve the numbers of African Americans, but among the groups harmed will be Latinos.  This comes on the heels of another state decision to reinstate contracting preferences for African Americans, but not for Latinos — thus, Latinos will be discriminated against in contracting, just like whites.  All of this is not only morally and legally dubious, it seems politically crazy as well.  Why not just focus on admitting the best qualified students and awarding contracts to the lowest bidders?
