Another Accreditation Critic Speaks

Math professor Robert Blumenthal of Oglethorpe University writes in this week’s Clarion Call for the Pope Center about the accreditation battle at St. Andrews College in Laurinburg, NC. The problem he sees is that the accreditation standards — specifically relating to a school’s finances — are so vague as to allow an accrediting association almost unfettered discretion.

He also wonders why it makes sense to say to a college, “Your financial picture looks shaky to us and therefore we have decided to remove your accreditation and ensure that you collapse.”
