Central-American Studies?

Text

Cal State Northridge already has a Central-American Studies program and according to this story students will soon be able to major in this uh, discipline.

The impetus behind this, explains the program’s coordinator is that students of Central-American ancestry had a feeling “that their own experience as Central Americans wasn’t being addressed.”

One might think that a college education should focus on mastering bodies of knowledge rather than studying “experiences,” but that idea is clearly outmoded today. Nevertheless, a professor who ends up advising a student who came from Costa Rica ought to suggest that majoring in physics or finance would be a far better use of his time than majoring in Central-American Studies.
