Practitioners or Martyrs?
Writing in the current Chronicle Review (subscriber site), Gary Pavela of the University of Maryland comes out squarely in favor of free speech on campus in “Only Speech Codes Should be Censored.”
Money quote: “Students can be challenged to become First Amendment practitioners and active participants in a serious discussion, instead of First Amendment martyrs.”
In one of its First Amendment decisions, the Supreme Court said that the cure for bad speech is not no speech, but more speech. Colleges should keep that in mind.
