The dishonest campaign against MCRI

Today’s Wall Street Journal has an editorial that nails the opposition to the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative for its utter disregard for the truth.

Especially nice: The opponents have spent vast sums, including money on TV ads featuring the two major college basketball coaches in the state, who complain that if the initiative passes the result will be less “diversity” at state universities. To that, the advocates of MCRI ask the two coaches if they employ racial preferences in deciding who makes the team.

Of course not.  Talent is more important than “diversity” when it comes to winning games, but the “pro-diversity” arguments used on behalf of preferential admissions policies can be applied just as well to sports teams. The only difference is that the results would be more visible.
