I’m coming late to this party, but I just had to comment on Candace’s post regarding Princeton president Shirley Tilghman’s claim that she had “never in five years had a student in [her] office” complaining about stifling political correctness.

Well, perhaps, but only a year ago FIRE had to intervene at Princeton to get the university to recognize an evangelical Christian organization and change policies that unfairly singled out religious groups for adverse treatment. In fact, FIRE wrote directly to President Tilghman in its effort to persuade Princeton to respect the religious freedom of its students.  To her credit, Princeton changed course almost immediately.

So President Tilghman may be right that no student has come to her office, but she is wrong to suggest that Princeton is blameless in the American academy’s ongoing war against the basic civil liberties of its students.
