Re: “Forgiving” Student Debt

Text

My colleague Shannon Blosser has some thoughts on the subject of hand-wringing over the burden of student debt here.

B

esides the economizing moves Candace mentions, colleges could also save students a significant amount of money each year by abandoning their mandatory student-activity fees. This system is socialistic, based on the notion that student groups need to look to the administration for hand-outs so they can do what they want to do. Student groups ought to sink or swim based on their ability to convince students and outsiders to support them voluntarily. It would be a nice lesson if colleges told such groups, “It doesn’t matter how worthy you say your activities are, we aren’t going to compel everyone to involuntarily subsidize you.”
