Revitalizing the Academic Core

The University of North Carolina is seeking a new president, as the current one, Erskine Bowles, will leave by year’s end. Bowles, a long-time Democrat who served as President Clinton’s chief of staff, has been pretty successful in the job. But Washington calls; he’s already heading up President Obama’s debt commission (along with former senator Alan Simpson). In a Pope Center article, I commend Bowles for a number of his initiatives but also lay out steps that should be taken by Bowles’s successor to shore up UNC’s long-neglected academic core.
