U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett announced $4.8 million in green-job training grants for Austin.
The money, part of the federal economic stimulus program, will train 1,000 people to work in energy efficiency and renewable-energy jobs, said Doggett, D-Austin.
The grant will go to Austin’s Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, which is sponsored by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 520.
“Green jobs have the ability to not only transform the way we do business, but repower America; this training will provide workers with the nuts and the bolts to construct a thriving clean energy economy right here in Central Texas,” Doggett said.
The Austin IBEW is partnering with ImagineSolar and the Austin Workforce Investment Board on the training initiative.
I’ll be sure to report back if this federal handout does any long-term good for the economy. Don’t expect to hear from me.
