We Should Tattoo Climate Deniers

Richard Glover writes from Australia:

Surely it’s time for climate-change deniers to have their opinions forcibly tattooed on their bodies.

Not necessarily on the forehead; I’m a reasonable man. Just something along their arm or across their chest so their grandchildren could say, ‘’Really? You were one of the ones who tried to stop the world doing something? And why exactly was that, granddad?’’

On second thoughts, maybe the tattooing along the arm is a bit Nazi-creepy. So how about they are forced to buy property on low-lying islands, the sort of property that will become worthless with a few more centimetres of ocean rise, so they are bankrupted by their own bloody-mindedness? Or what about their signed agreement to stand, in the year 2040, lashed to a pole at a certain point in the shallows off Manly? If they are right and the world is cooling – ‘’climate change stopped in the year 1998′’ is one of their more boneheaded beliefs – their mouths will be above water. If not …

OK, maybe the desire to see the painful, thrashing death of one’s opponents is not ideal. But, my God, these people are frustrating. You just know that in 20 years’ time, when the costs of our inaction are clear, the climate deniers will become climate-denial-deniers. ‘’Who me? Oh, no, I always believed in it. Yes, it’s hard to understand why people back then were so daft. It’s so much more costly to stop it now.’’

That’s why the tattoo has its appeal.

I’m in, but alarmists like Glover have to get tattoos, too. Maybe yearly tattoos to keep track of which alarmist predictions have come true and which haven’t. For example, Glover’s first tattoo could read, “UN PREDICTS 50 MILLION CLIMATE REFUGEES BY 2010 — FALSE!”

(And before the Fellowrati at Media Matters challenge me to get my ink, my wife has the final say on it.)

"So how about they are forced to buy property on low-lying islands"

Good heavens!!! Where do I go to sign up? Oh, and I want a deed all the way out to the Marianas trench, in case the oceans recede.

Seriously, there is denying that the earth is warming, though it hasn't in the last decade; and denying that man's puny actions can do something about it.

70% of the earth's surface is water. No people live there. That leaves 30%.

Of that 30%, 70% is uninhabitable - deserts, mountains, jungles, etc. That leaves 9%.

Of that 9%, half is very low density inhabited, such as agricultural, such as the American plains. That leaves 4.5% more densely populated. And that's just the earth's surface.

The average depth of the oceans is just over 12,000 feet (2.5 miles). The earth's atmosphere goes up to 100,000 feet.

But somehow, man is going to do something on that 4.5% of the earth's surface that is going to change the climate? What conceit!

The part about buying land on low lying islands sounds good to me. I would think that if people who live on these islands are really that scared of global warming I should be able to get ocean front property at a really good price. Somehow though I just can't seem to find it.
