Obama Promises to Buy a Chevy Volt
President Barack Obama delivered an endorsement to General Motors’ struggling Chevrolet Volt, saying he plans to buy the extended-range electric vehicle upon leaving office.
“Five years from now when I’m not president anymore, I’ll buy one and drive it myself,” Obama said to applause during a speech Tuesday to 1,600 workers and retirees from the United Auto Workers union. “Yes, that’s right.”
But the president forgot he had once driven a Volt all of about 10 feet, a move that worried the Secret Service during a July 2010 visit to GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant
Obama said Tuesday that the “Secret Service wouldn’t let me drive it. But I liked sitting in it. It was nice.I’ll bet it drives real good.”
Obama recounted his brief drive during a speech to GM workers in 2010. “Now, I have to tell you some of you saw me drive a Volt about 12 inches. They don’t let me drive much these days,” Obama said.
There is a compromise. Why doesn’t the president insist all of his cabinet members drive a Volt?
