Bill Petti of Beyond the Boxscore lists last offseason’s position-player free-agent class and examines how they performed in 2011.

FanGraphs’ Jim Breen on Blue Jays executive Tony LaCava’s decision to turn down the Orioles’ general manager gig: “The intriguing aspect of this development, however, is not that LaCava turned down Baltimore in favor of Toronto. It’s more that nobody in the baseball community believes he made the wrong choice.”

With Tony La Russa retired, the Cardinals requested and received permission from the Phillies to interview Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg. Meanwhile, Theo Epstein informed Mike Quade that his managerial services were no longer required. (Epstein said that Chicago’s next skipper needed to have prior big-league experience, presumably excluding the Hall of Fame second baseman from consideration.)
