Two highly touted prospects made noteworthy debuts for their parent clubs last night.
Outfielder Starling Marte, 23, homered on the first pitch he saw in the bigs — only the 28th player in history to do so — going 2 for 4 in the Pirates’ victory over the Astros in Minute Maid Park.
Pitcher Matt Harvey, also 23, struck out 11 Diamondbacks and did not allow a run in 5 1/3 innings, as the Mets won in the desert. In the 50-plus years of the franchise, no other Mets pitcher — yes, that includes Tom Seaver (8) and Dwight Gooden (5) — fanned as many in their debut.
Jason Fry of Faith and Fear in Flushing shares his thoughts about the former Tar Heel’s performance.
