Is it really bad for terrorists to know that we're watching, and for citizens to know that the government is on high alert, so they should be watching too? I'll concede that it's probably a good idea to play it safe and not talk about this stuff (so I won't anymore), but thanks to radio and the Internet, the information is gonna be out there. By the way, a friend just wrote to let me know law enforcement is "all over" Grand Central tonight. I think it's safe to let the terrorists know that. Posted at 10:44 PM SO... The reason for such rampant destruction is that whenever Google indexes one of John's described googlewhacks, the googlewhack will then have TWO googles -- the original and John's mention of it. During Operation Allied Force, pro-Serbian spotters reported on Allied takeoffs from bases in Italy to assist the enemy in his defensive efforts. I think the way to treat information like this is to silently wish the pilots well and go about our business confident that they are getting the job done, whatever it might be. Posted at 12:56 PM CHURCH VS. STATE [Rod Dreher] This is a curious story. Fr. James Haley, a priest of the Catholic diocese of Arlington, Va., was subpoenaed to give evidence in a civil trial involving another priest who impregnated a parishioner's wife, then, after her divorce, left the priesthood and married her. Bishop Paul Loverde of Arlington ordered Fr. Haley not to testify against the ex-priest, "to avoid scandal, to maintain ecclesiastical discipline and to protect the reputation and privacy of both the faithful and priests of this diocese." Fr. Haley obeyed the civil law and gave his testimony in the suit, which was later dismissed - and now the bishop is going to suspend him permanently for disobedience . This situation raises interesting church-state issues. Does a bishop have the First Amendment right to (in effect) fire his employee for obeying the civil law in a matter like this? Whatever the answer, the mess in Arlington is reaching a boil: I've been hearing late this week from outraged laypeople and clergy who are now organizing against Bp. Loverde. These are not Call to Action liberals, or Voice of the Faithful types, not by a long stretch. Posted at 12:46 PM CORNER... Posted at 12:40 AM Thursday, November 14, 2002 TOM DELAY'S GRACIOUSNESS [Mike Potemra ] He made a very nice comment about Ohio's Deborah Pryce, who has just made history by being elected Chairman of the House GOP Conference. Here's what DeLay said, as quoted by the Hotline: "Republicans never do anything by quotas, we do everything by merit, and obviously it is just added sweetness that a kind face and a very articulate woman can handle the job."DeLay's comments are deeply satisfying to anyone who is revolted by race and gender tokenism, because they declare that Pryce-who is now the highest-ranking woman in the history of the House GOP-was elevated not because of her gender but because of her talents and the content of her character. This is a tribute to Deborah Pryce-and to Tom DeLay himself. Posted at 04:56 PM POOR DEMS, POOR FEMS [Jonah Goldberg] For much of the last year, much of the coverage about Nancy Pelosi harped on the expected symbolic triumph that would come with the first female congressional leader. Unfortunately for them, the buzz has been about her being too liberal. This is a defeat for the Dems and a strategic victory for feminism, though I'm sure they don't see it that way. Nobody cares that she's a woman. Posted at 03:45 PM PELOSI, FRIEND OF THE PERSECUTED [Rod Dreher] I don't expect those of us on the Right will have much good to say about the politics of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the new House Minority Leader, in the weeks and months to come. But it should be noted that her rise to power is great news for persecuted Christians and other religious minorities. She has been a reliable crusader for freedom of worship (here she is denouncing China's abuses on the House floor), and should be given credit for her work in this vital arena. I'm sure the governments of China, Sudan, etc., are unhappy with today's Democratic caucus vote. Good. Posted at 02:52 PM FATWA JUSTIFIES WAR AGAINST SADDAM [Rich Lowry] Well, not quite. But Yosseff Bodansky writes in his new book about the fatwa of a Shite leader in Iraq after the Gulf War when Saddam was putting down a revolt in the south. If only we could have this fatwa rolled over to cover our coming war in Iraq . . . but I assume it doesn’t work that way: "Many Iranians were eager to assist the Shiite revolt in Iraq, especially as Saddam’s Republican Guard began devastating the Shiite holy shrines in Najaf and Qarbala. The crisis peaked in mid-March, when the Grand Ayatollah Abul-Qassim al-Khoi—one of the most senior Shiite religious leaders in the world—issued a fatwa against Saddam. The fatwa decreed that anyone killed fighting Baghdad’s troops was a martyr and thus assured a place in heaven. The fatwa also declared Saddam and his henchmen to be apostates, which meant that a Muslim was permitted to shed their blood. There can be no greater denunciation in Islam and no stronger call for an all-out rebellion. Baghdad reacted with fury, intensifying the assault on Najaf." It's Clintonites who insist that it's so. Here's the passage from Daniel Benjamin and Steven Simon's book The Age of Sacred Terror, wherein the Clinton NSC staffers justify Clinton's controversial missile strike against el-Shifa, that Sudanese chemical plant: "Others contended that to have analyzed the soil sample at just one laboratory was shoddy science and that EMPTA, a chemical found in it, could hypothetically have been a derivative of pesticide production. But the CIA's analysis, which reporters were given on August 24, showed that EMPTA had no commercial use anywhere in the world. This conclusion was never refuted; it was also widely ignored. Officials who spoke with reporters also noted that Iraqi weapons scientists had been linked to al-Shifa, and this Iraqi connection was independently underscored by UN weapons inspectors. There are several different methods for making VX [the chemical that the Clinton administration believed was being manufactured at al-Shifa], but the only one known to involve EMPTA is Iraq's." Also, any thoughts on the developing fiasco of his trail would be appreciated. Posted at 11:35 AM PELOSI THE HAWK [Rich Lowry] I’m working on a column on how Dems supported Clinton’s interventions in the 1990s, but oppose going to Iraq now. Here’s the opening, fyi: “The rap on Nancy Pelosi, the San Francisco liberal set to become the new leader of House Democrats, is that she’s too dovish to lead her party against President Bush during a time of war. The rap is wrong. Pelosi, a bright and talented politician, is no peacenik. In fact, she’s practically an imperialist. She supports the U.S. attacking countries that represent no threat to it. She supports the U.S. imposing its will on smaller neighboring countries. She supports the U.S. cajoling and bullying its allies to bend them to its will. She supports bombing civilian targets to get recalcitrant regimes to do what the U.S. wants. She supports the U.S. tutoring backwards parts of the world in “civilized behavior." Finally, she supports the long-term occupation of foreign lands after the U.S. has vanquished its enemies…” Posted at 11:32 AM THE BISHOPS' ILLUSIONS [Jonah Goldberg] In their statement about a possible war with Iraq, the Bishops say: "We have no illusions about the behavior or intentions of the Iraqi government. The Iraqi leadership must cease its internal repression, end its threats to its neighbors, stop any support for terrorism, abandon its efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction and destroy all such existing weapons." Now, I don't want to pick on the Bishops, but I cannot stand this boilerplate -- which we hear from liberals of all denominations. Whenever I debate an anti-war or pro-UN-sanctions liberal, they say "nobody thinks Saddam is a good guy" or, like the Bishops, "I'm under no illusions about Saddam." But the fact is, they are enthralled to some illusions about Saddam. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, about Saddam which says that inspections and sanctions will stop him from pursuing nuclear weapons. And, once he has them, there's no reason whatsoever to think that he won't invade his neighbors and we will be powerless to stop him for fear of nuclear reprisal (the specter of nuclear attack on the US -- while serious and possible -- has been overplayed while the near certainty of an irreversible Kuwait invasion has been underplayed). In short, if you think we were right for reversing his invasion of Kuwait in 1991, you should be in favor of toppling him now to prevent it from happening again. If you think there's another way, you do harbor illusions about Saddam and his regime. Posted at 10:51 AM MUST SOUND BETTER IN TRANSLATION [Jonah Goldberg] I love Iraq's letter to the UN. As we at NRO have two competing instincts I am torn. On the one hand we believe in Tong Wars and tribal loyalties not to mention chivalry. On the other hand we believe in letting people fight their own fights. So, while I desperately would like to come to K-Lo's defense, I think she can handle herself. But I should say that it must be a lot easier to call people hacks from the comfort and safety of anonymity. Posted at 09:03 AM NRO READERS ON NRO MERCHANDISE... Posted at 04:40 PM WHILE WE'RE AT IT [Rod Dreher] Bishop Gettelfinger will now turn with his fellow bishops to debate the morality of the coming war with Iraq. Indications are that the Bishop of Evansville will bring the same moral clarity to this discussion. Here’s some of what he wrote in his diocesan newspaper on the one-year anniversary of September 11: "I worry! Have those in our hall of government moved beyond frontier justice? … Let us never forget that those who terrorized us were committed to the mission of 'getting our attention.' They died for their cause—just to get our attention! The message from the oppressed has been very clear. … Must we Americans continue to be blind? Must we continue to be deaf? Have we forgotten the haunting ballads of the late 1960’s? How many more must die? Our president and his colleagues must learn to listen to those who counsel him from nations and territories beyond our borders. So must we! Terrorism is terrorism under any title. ‘National Security’ seems to be just another title for the same." (Incidentally, Touchstone's Lee Podles has some short but sweet words on the U.S. bishops’ authority to pronounce on the morality of the Iraq war.) Posted at 04:39 PM ALL BUT ONE [Rod Dreher] The U.S. Catholic bishops have overwhelmingly approved the revised sex-abuse policy. There were six abstentions and one “no” vote. It came from Bishop Gerald Gettelfinger of Evansville, IN, who objected to the provision forbidding bishops from reinstating a one-time offender who had been, in the bishop’s judgment, rehabilitated. “I think we have lost that discretionary authority,” replied Cardinal Francis George, wisely. Gettelfinger’s name surfaced nationally earlier this year when it was revealed that he had allowed a priest caught in 1995 with scads of hard-core kiddie porn to remain in parish ministry. This is the kind of thing Cardinal George is talking about. Posted at 04:22 PM ONE MORE POINT ON GAY MARRIAGE [Stanley Kurtz] One more point to add to my thoughts below about what might turn out to be legal gay marriage in Massachusetts. If the Democrats meet in Boston in ‘04 (as it now appears they will) in the wake of a national culture war precipitated by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the association between the Democrats, the gay-marriage issue, and the problem of judicial usurpation will be indelible in the public mind. Posted at 02:58 PM ATLANTIC PEARL HARBOR [Rich Lowry] Here’s an e-mail that makes a good point regarding my recent column on sonar and whales. “Dear Mr. Lowry: As a second -generation Nat. Review subscriber, I offer my compliments on your article on the threat posed by subs in the hands of our enemies. I only wish your observations had been amplified by familiarity with Michael Gannon's fine book "Operation Drumbeat", documenting the havoc wrought by German subs in early 1942 not along Britain's shores, but our own... a largely preventable debacle Gannon calls our "Atlantic Pearl Harbor". The Brits, at least, did their best, during the darkest days of the Allied struggle against the U-boats, to reduce their losses through such measures as a coastal blackout...something the U.S. did not impose on itself until the hulls and bones of hundreds of ships and sailors were littering our coastal seabed from Cape May to Cape Canaveral. It seems the unconscionable complacency about the sub menace of that day has its counterpart in the San Francisco Court's overweening concern for whales today. Or is it really that body's veiled hostility toward the military? Or could it reflect the sad possibility that this generation of U.S. civilians, like that earlier one, simply won't get serious about being at war until the country has sustained two hard hits. Back then it was Pearl Harbor and Drumbeat; today: 9/11 and...?” Posted at 02:55 PM LET BURK BE BURK [Kathryn Jean Lopez] John Fonte writes: "Why doesn't Hootie or somebody send a copy of Burk's Ms. sterialization article to the 30 corporate executives that Burk sent letters to, and maybe to some other selected media as well, an example of the totalitarian mind at work. That doesn't say much for the quality of Mr. Spielberg's existence. The only thing remarkable about the Cuban dictator is the longevity of his rule and the ferocity with which he has enforced it. In all other respects, he appears to be a mediocre and unimaginative bore, still in thrall to an ideology that has long since been shown to be nonsense. I know that should be no revelation, but some days you need reminding. And boy have I gotten it today! On Monday I posted an off little Corner item on my trip back from D.C. this weekend. I was a bit of a mess, with an overstuffed bag of papers and such and lost my ticket. The woman sitting next to me on the overstuffed train was very kind and turns out she is the author of a new book, so I wanted to plug it in case it was of interest to anyone reading NRO. Well, I made a parenthetical remark about being a slow-poke getting one of those neat rolling suitcases everyone else on the Northeast corridor has, and, well, now I have one. Jeff Dunn of the InGear Corporation sent me an InGear suitcase! Jeff Dunn, by the way, besides being a good guy, a smart capitalist, and a careful NRO reader, went to high school with our very own John J. Miller (I’ll have to follow up on that lead). Although her son was returned to Sweden last December, in May Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage authorized the extradition of Ann-Christin Jagne to Sweden to face child-abduction charges. While the U.S. government cooperates to this outrageous extent to mollify the Swedes, the Swedish government pays the court costs of its citizens who abduct American children in violation of international treaties, and refuses to extradite its citizens. While Ann-Christin serves her two years in a Swedish prison she will no doubt be reconsidering her decision to become a naturalized American when she could have remained a citizen of a country that defends its own. Posted at 11:46 AM ANOTHER KEEPER FROM THE ONION [Emmy Chang] Marxists' Apartment A Microcosm Of Why Marxism Doesn't Work. Posted at 11:45 AM OH, WHAT A WEB WE WEAVE [Kathryn Jean Lopez] A point of clarification/order. I posted a short piece on Martha Burk, the woman waging a war against Augusta National yesterday both quoting a Ms. magazine article where she posits a "modest proposal" to end the abortion wars: sterilizing men. A smart blogger (Kevin Drum) calls me on it today: As he notes, I added a parenthetical note after it went up to make clear I knew Burk was probably being overdramatic. True, I did. But not because, as he suspects, I saw the piece only after I wrote my little item. I did, in fact, have the piece. I also suspected Burk didn't really want to sterilize all men. However, Burk, a feminist writing that in Ms. was not the same as the likes Rod or Jonah writing the same thing on NRO. Ms. folks do believe men are the problem, and, frankly, anyone who has spent too much time exposed to feminist literature knows that. In addition, I do note in my little piece that she was presenting this in the context of abortion. The point of the piece, too, stands not only on the short Ms. piece (which appears here, in a badly transcribed copy) , but, more importantly, on the numbers Kellyanne Conway's polling outfit came up with when they started calling members of Martha Burk's own group. The majority of the sample they surveyed have no interest in joining the crusade against Augusta. It’s an interesting, and newsy, relevant point. (And, if you want to take a look yourself, the full details on the survey will be up on the polling company’s website later today, I understand.) Martha Burk is all over the place, often on TV and in newspaper stories with little or no counter. On some TV appearances in the last few days hosts have smirked and laughed when referencing the Augusta National’s position on keeping women out. I put up a quick piece giving people a counter view. I respectfully disagree with Mr. Drum that it was a “hatchet job,” but I did want to make sure people realized I knew she was exaggerating and wasn’t trying to pull one over on anyone, thus adding that parenthetical shortly after posting the piece. I should have added something in The Corner clarifying, as one of my colleagues did when his piece was taken too literally on the same day, but I didn’t. In retrospect, I wish I had. I apologize for any misrepresentations or misinterpretations. Posted at 11:45 AM BREAKING [Kathryn Jean Lopez] Evidently Saddam is letting inspectors in. Where, when, etc., I have not seen yet.... Posted at 11:32 AM THIS INTERESTING EMAIL.... [Jonah Goldberg] The thing you're missing, possibly, is that Canada is growing ever more virulently antisemitic (or Jew-hating, to be precise). Synagogue burnings and cemetary desecrations have to date occurred in 4 of the 10 provinces. That jab at Asper is the Canadian version of the "Zionist conspiracy"; the only possible reason for a newspaper supporting Israel's right to exist is of course if it belongs to the worldwide conspiracy of evil plotting Jews who are simultaneously controlling the banks and sponsoring the evils of Communism. Helps explain this interesting email (titled "Why the Israelis are always crying"): You people have the knack of pissing off the rest of the world without even trying. Maybe you should take a good look at yourselves and see why they predicted that Jews would be persecuted for 2000 years. It's what you guys do. I bought a house from one and understand it fully. You can't help it, you just are a bunch of unlikable people who try to screw everyone with whom you come in contact. Well, that's fine, keep saying "we're offended" which is what the rest of the world has been saying about your for centuries. Thank your God for the American armament! Though, to be fair, I've found little evidence of anti-Semitism among the Canadian hate-mailers except of the variety usually found in some of our own lefty anti-war quarters. Posted at 10:39 AM LET'S ROLL THE VIDEOTAPE [Jonah Goldberg] Earlier this week the United States blew-up a car in Yemen which contained high-ranking al Qaeda operatives and, reportedly, an American citizen from Lackawanna, New York named Kamal Derwish. Mr. Derwish was an unindicted co-conspirator of the "Lackawanna Six." Here are some comments made about the arrest at the time. This is an excerpt from a 9/16 CNN broadcast: ZOGBY: Or more -- I think more to the point, the kind of anti- nativist hysteria that took place after World War I when we had, you know, people being pummeled to death and the very similar kind of hysteria that time against all things foreign. This time it's more directed specifically at Arabs and Muslims. I think that's the period but we'll end up feeling bad. We'll be embarrassed and we'll take a look at ourselves and we'll say why did we do it? The point is that we have time for self reflection today and I think the fact that we're even having the conversation, you and I, and there are many others having the conversation, is a good thing, but Governor Pataki ought not to be doing what he's doing in New York. And from 9/16 New York Post: Khalid Qazi, president of the Western New York chapter of the American Muslim Council, said the arrests were shocking and painful. He said he knew three of the men, whom he described as good citizens. Posted at 10:37 AM HERE COME DA JUDGES? [Jonathan Adler] The New York Times reports that the Senate Judiciary Committee will consider Bush judicial nominees Michael McConnell and Dennis Shedd today. Posted at 10:01 AM THIS SUMMER [Stanley Kurtz ] Here’s something else that could happen if Massachusetts legalizes gay marriage next summer. It’s likely that we’ll see a few Supreme Court vacancies over the next year. Imagine how judicially imposed gay marriage would play into confirmation debates. The problem of an out of control judiciary imposing what are properly legislative decisions on the country will have received dramatic illustration, making the judiciary a key issue in the presidential campaign. Posted at 09:59 AM ON THE GROUND IN MASS. [Stanley Kurtz] What will happen if the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court legalizes gay marriage next summer? I’ve already shown how the legalization of gay marriage in even a single state will initiate a massive legal battle and a national culture war. There will be law suits arguing that the federal Constitution forces recognition of gay marriage on every state, even the many that have constitutional prohibitions on gay marriage. All this will give a huge boost to the campaign for the Federal Marriage Amendment. Right now, politicians want nothing to do with this issue, but if the Massachusetts court legalizes gay marriage, every politician in the country may be forced to take a stand. And the maneuvering over court cases and the Federal Marriage Amendment will play out throughout the presidential campaign. Posted at 09:58 AM THE NEXT BIG ISSUE [Stanley Kurtz ] The war aside, what will be the biggest domestic issue of the next presidential campaign? Health insurance? Social Security reform? Would you believe gay marriage? It could happen. Here’s how. The Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts will soon be hearing a case much like the one that led to civil unions in Vermont, with the difference that not civil unions, but fully legal gay marriage could be the outcome. The case will probably be decided in the summer of 2003. The Massachusetts high court is very liberal, and there is now tremendous momentum behind the plaintiffs in the case. And I certainly think potshots at National Review are silly. But this is an interesting response to my Canada story. A few things are noteworthy. First, Jeffrey Simpson -- whose book I cited in my piece -- throws around insults and insists that I'm deeply "ignorant" about Canada. But, second, he never offers a single example of my ignorance. In my business, Insults + No Evidence = You Lose. Third, without ever mentioning my name, Simpson concedes my central point by noting Canada's "insecurity" and obsession with America's esteem. Seems to me that my "ignorance" was confirmed by this admission. Oh, and lastly, this pro-Israel bias thing at the end strikes me as a particularly odd exercize. But perhaps in my ignorance of Canada, I fail to grasp the nuances. I'd need to be reasonably close (one hour or so by car, or with car + metro) to Washington to attend to my NR duties (that is, so I can get into the city when I need to, not a daily commute). I'm wondering if there are any good little towns in the area where I could rent a house as a base, and my wife and three-year-old son would have things to do and people to see while I work. N.B., a good Catholic parish nearby is important to us. Please send your ideas and suggestions. Posted at 04:53 PM ONE CHEER FOR DEMOCRACY [Rich Lowry] Another very thoughtful WashPost editorial, this one making the point that “democracy” can be a problem when nation-building. The Post points to the experience in Bosnia as a lesson for post-war Iraq: "The Bosnia experience offers some support for this more muscular postwar scheme. Paddy Ashdown, the veteran British politician and statesman who is now the high representative in Bosnia, has pointed out that the repeated elections in that country have sometimes impeded rather than advanced the progress of desperately needed economic and political reforms. Most of the important changes in the country, from guarantees for returning refugees to the purging of criminals from government, have happened on the orders of Mr. Ashdown and his predecessors. And further progress is unlikely unless Western governments tightly condition continued aid on concrete steps by the Bosnians. In short, while democracy should be a central aim of postwar nation-building, it cannot necessarily be the starting point -- and even if it is, a strong outside authority is essential." So conservative should be very careful about loosely talking about “democracy” in post-war Iraq. Pluralism, yes. Reform, yes. One man, one vote—get back to us in a decade or so. Conservatives should also be willing to acknowledge the very strong chance that the Iraqi opposition is a bunch of bozos. Posted at 04:17 PM EXCELLENT DENNIS ROSS… [Rich Lowry] …piece on the U.N. resolution. The best I’ve seen to date. He makes a very compelling case that if we don’t pull the plug after Saddam’s inevitably false Dec. 8 declaration, we’re in for another round of pointless Saddam-U.N. rope-a-dope. Posted at 04:10 PM ONE WORD—REFUND [Rich Lowry] Posted at 04:05 PM CLARIFICATION [Stanley Kurtz] I’ve gotten a lot of response to today’s column on the Democrats’ dilemma. Let me clarify something. I am not predicting a McCain switch to the Democrats. On balance, I think it’s pretty unlikely, although no doubt some would like to see it happen. In the piece itself I even said that this “wild scenario” would probably never play out. Of course, a switch is possible. If anything, a McCain candidacy as an Independent is more likely. I highlighted the most spectacular scenario to make a point--that there’s no magical solution for the Democrats. Even a radical intervention by a hawkish centrist like McCain would founder on the underlying split on the war from which the party suffers. The radical scenario in the front of the piece was really a way of driving home the points in the second half of the piece. If you read it carefully, you’ll see that I say just that. So I don’t really think that the Democrats are about to retake the Senate. Rest easy.
