McCain Steams On
McCain often steams, but last week's steaming was especially interesting.

The magisterial Mr. Will's exclusive NRO column.

ohn McCain was steaming. In point of fact, he often is, but last week's steaming was especially interesting. He was entirely isolated as the only Republican opposing the nomination — by the Republican leadership — of Bradley Smith to a Republican slot on the Federal Election Commission. This came shortly after he sided with the Democratic leader, South Dakota senator Tom Daschle, in what has become a state of permanent war in the Senate. The Democrats want to attach to essential legislation other measures involving difficult votes (e.g., gun control) for Republicans running for reelection this year. McCain seems to have decided that the preservation of his post-primary national stature depends on the continuing cultivation of his reputation as a "maverick" and the continuing courtship of his base, the national media. There are few certainties in politics, but this is one: McCain will not be George W. Bush's running mate.
