Larry King: “We’re back from the break with President George Bush and Senator John Kerry. Fellas, we’ve had some pretty good back-and-forth here, some interesting stuff, but I’d like to switch gears, if I may. Senator, you’ve said before that you enjoy poetry and actually write poetry . . .”
Senator Kerry: “That’s right, Larry. I work in both metered rhyme and free verse.”
Larry King: “Would you favor us, Senator, with a couple of lines?”
Senator Kerry: “I’d be happy to.”
President Bush: “What the hell?”
Larry King: “Sir, you’ll get a chance to discuss your poetry in a moment. Senator?”
Senator Kerry: “I wrote this one when I was saving the lives of my crewmen in Vietnam . . .”
