The 72-Year Smear

Kerry's jobs claim is false.

“He’s also the only president in 72 years to lose jobs — 1. 6 million jobs lost.” — John Kerry

BuzzCharts strongly suggests that President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney no longer leave this false claim unanswered. During the debates, John Kerry adopted a strategy of issuing so many accusations and condemnations per minute that it would have been impossible for the president and vice president to answer them all. However, we’re now out of the debates — there’s time enough to answer. Furthermore, while many accusations can be ignored in American politics, accusations about domestic job losses are not among them. Double ditto for accusations that drag the Great Depression into the mix.

The president needs to say something like this:

Once again, Sen. Kerry has misled the American people. The claim that I am the first president in 72 years to have a net jobs loss is undeniably false. It’s false because during my time as president, we have not lost jobs. We’ve created 1.7 million jobs. For some strange reason, Sen. Kerry has decided not to count self-employed people in his calculations. Realtors, appraisers, many financial planners, accountants, and contractors are owners of their own businesses, but in John Kerry’s world, they just don’t count. As with most untruths, there is a small kernel of truth that makes them seem plausible. Fewer people are on corporate payrolls in America today than when I took office. However, people have not moved from traditional jobs into the despair of unemployment, they’ve moved from traditional jobs into their dream of entrepreneurship. This is not just a statistical thing, it’s a philosophical thing. For Sen. Kerry, these people don’t have real jobs. To them and to me, they do.

Plainly and simply, the president needs to put the truth to the Kerry lies on jobs.
