Democrat Sink Picks Gubernatorial Running Mate

Gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink has selected a running mate. From the AP:

Democrat Rod Smith is again campaigning for the governor’s office – as Alex Sink’s running mate. Smith, who lost the Democratic nomination for governor in 2006, said Tuesday he decided to accept Sink’s offer after she assured him that he would have a productive role in the administration.

“Sitting on my hands would not be something I would be interested in doing,” Smith said. “The job of the lieutenant governor, if done correctly, is a partnership. We’ll use combined talents.”

The St. Petersburg Times suggests it’s a conventional and “safe” choice:

The selection, which comes a week before the primary when most of the media attention is on the bitterly fought Republican primary, is both conventional and tactical but, perhaps most importantly, it is safe. Smith, 60, a lawyer and former Alachua County state attorney, brings with him name recognition in the state’s most conservative areas and an ability to work with the Republican Legislature.
