Conn. Candidates React to GOP’s ‘Pledge to America’

Today, Republicans in the House released their “Pledge to America.” Asked for Linda McMahon’s reaction, her spokesman, Shawn McCoy, writes in an e-mail:

With each passing day, voters are becoming increasingly worried with the state of the economy and the direction Washington is taking our country. We can all agree that government has a spending problem, not a revenue problem, and we need to act immediately to get our fiscal house in order. Linda offered her plan to put Connecticut back to work months ago, and she is focused on how we can turn our economy around, rein in government spending, and stop government overreach. She’s going to continue to campaign on these issues as Dick Blumenthal stakes his campaign on tax hikes for small businesses and seniors as well as a national energy tax, which negatively impacts middle class families.

Congressional candidate Sam Caligiuri says in a press release:

“The ‘Pledge to America’ provides a thorough articulation of the many changes that must be made in order for us to put America back on the right track economically and otherwise.  It includes many of the ideas I have been discussing with voters throughout our District, such as enacting spending caps on the federal budget.  In addition, it echoes what voters have been telling me they want:  significant cuts to federal spending, and the repeal of the costliest, failed policies of this Congress, including the federal takeover of health care and the stimulus package.  It is by no means an exhaustive list of what must be done, and I have my own ideas for additional reforms beyond what is outlined in the Pledge, including banning earmarks and offering tax credits to small businesses to help make offering health care to their employees more affordable,” said Caligiuri.  “Most important to me and voters in the Fifth District are getting spending under control and implementing policies that make it easier – not harder – for the private sector to grow jobs.  The Pledge is an excellent step in this direction.”

Finally, congressional candidate Dan Debicella says in a similar release:

“The ‘Pledge to America’ reiterates the need for urgent action to repair our economy and reclaim our government for the people,” said Debicella.  “I share agreement on many of its principles but will remain independent of any political party platforms.  Unlike Jim Himes, who has voted 95 percent of the time with his party’s leaders, I will advocate for policies that are in the best interest of this district’s independent-minded voters. I will not rubber stamp any Washington agenda.”
