Kathy Dahlkemper, embattled blue dog Democrat in northwestern Pennsylvania’s 3rd District, has come out heavily negative in her third ad of the general-election cycle. She’s struggling to fend off an insurgent Mike Kelly, one of the National Republic Congressional Committee’s “Young Guns.” Earlier this week, Kelly said of his candidacy, “The only difference between the voters in this district and me is that my name is on the ballot.”

Charlie Dent and John Callahan are going at each other in ads in the 15th District in western Pennsylvania. Dent, the Republican incumbent, described as a “nice guy,” is one of the few Republicans particularly vulnerable in Pennsylvania.

Union contractors are complaining that they are having “little or no” success in scoring jobs extracting Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale natural gas, which is possibly the second-largest formation on the planet. Shale extraction is a major point of many of the candidates, including Pat Toomey and Tom Corbett, to propel job growth.

Amid a cratering economy, Pat Toomey and Joe Sestak — and their surrogates — are spending millions to get their name and face on TV as election day nears. One local Pennsylvania paper highlights a retired worker grumbling, “It makes you wonder where all that money comes from.” It’s estimated that some $7 million has been spent just by outside groups since mid-summer.

Despite having left office nearly two years ago, Democrats are again staking their latest ad buy against Pat Toomey by linking him to George W. Bush, complaining that Toomey “supported the Bush agenda.” Unfortunately for them, many blue dogs are running scared for having supported the Obama agenda. Toomey remains 9 points ahead in the latest Rasmussen poll.
