The effort comes with such a big price tag–as much as $2 million annually per center in federal funding–that even Harry Reid, a vocal green-energy proponent, says the timing may be poor. A spokesman for Reid said that while the senator “supports advanced clean-energy research, these are challenging budgetary times for that level of funding.”
