“My children are at the center of my world,” Obama said. “I come at this stuff as a mother, really, more than anything else.”
Echoing themes from a Bennet campaign that has pointedly emphasized women’s issues in recent weeks, Obama praised Bennet’s record as chief of Denver Public Schools. She chided Democrats whom she said might have thought their work was done after a tough election battle for Barack Obama.
“The truth is, this is the hard part” now, Michelle Obama told the crowd of about 300, under a tent behind the home of Margot and Marc Pinto. “You were all there — that’s what Barack told us.”
Obama said she heard from many families in 2008, “you all have his back. And in order to have his back, we’re going to need people like Michael.”
Democrats “can’t just vote once and wait for change to happen,” Obama continued. “We need you to get them fired up,” she told the crowd, who had paid a minimum of $250 and up to $2,400 for luncheon tickets.
