NRCC Shifts Funds from Markey to Salazar, More ‘Competitive’ Race

The National Republican Congressional Committee no longer believes that resources allocated in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District will be necessary, despite a recent Hill poll showing a tighter race, and is redirecting very large sum to the “more competitive Colorado race” in the state’s 3rd Congressional District on the Western Slope:

The National Republican Congressional Committee canceled spending against Rep. Betsy Markey (D) in Colorado’s 4th district for the last week before the election and added $700,000 over three weeks to target Rep. John Salazar (D) in the 3rd district.

The Salazar/Tipton rematch from 2006 has not seen a great deal of independent polling, but the NRCC’s internals must show Gardner pulling away by a significant margin and Tipton continuing to hold on to smaller leads within the margin of error that would give the committee the belief that such a large expenditure will push Tipton over the top in the final three weeks of the campaign.

Sean Walsh, spokesman for Tipton, told Battle ‘10, “It’s testament to the campaign Scott is running to win this race – positive, disciplined and focused on the issues that contrast him with Congressman John “No Show” Salazar. It demonstrates that the voters of the Third District are growing more confident that Scott Tipton has the organization muscle to win and the principled determination to lead.”
