Steele Comments on Unemployment Rate

The unemployment rate fell to 9.4 percent last month, the Labor Department announces today. In response, GOP chairman Michael Steele releases a statement in which he calls the creation of 103,000 jobs “welcome news.” Still, Steele adds, “it cannot be overlooked that the cumulative effect of the policies championed by President Obama and Congressional Democrats allowed 2010 to end right where it began – with unemployment remaining well above 9 percent.” The full statement is below.

“While the creation of 103,000 jobs is welcome news, it cannot be overlooked that the cumulative effect of the policies championed by President Obama and Congressional Democrats allowed 2010 to end right where it began – with unemployment remaining well above 9 percent. Republicans’ success last month in preventing any American from seeing a tax hike for the next two years will provide a foundation for future economic growth and will increase the certainty needed for employers to begin hiring again. President Obama and Congressional Democrats should heed the clear message sent by voters in November’s elections and continue working with Republicans to reduce spending and promote a pro-growth, free market agenda that will get America working again.”
