The Democratic National Committee has been very involved in the Wisconsin union protests. Organizing for America, Obama’s former campaign organization that is now a branch of the DNC, helped mobilize protesters, used Facebook and Twitter to keep the momentum going, and even launched phone banks.
So it may come as a surprise to find out that the head of the DNC, former Virginia governor Tim Kaine, wasn’t always such a labor cheerleader. In a 2006 press release copied by a Daily Kos blogger, Kaine said this:
The Secretary of the Commonwealth has no – I repeat, no – role in the enforcement of Virginia’s right-to-work law, a law I strongly support.
Kaine was responding to the Virginia legislature’s rejection of former AFL-CIO leader Danny LeBlanc to become secretary of the commonwealth. LeBlanc was strongly opposed to right-to-work laws, which allow individual employees to decide whether they wish to join a union or not.
