Egypt’s Military Announces Reforms

Some of them quite refreshing:

Egypt’s military command said Monday that the ousted president, Hosni Mubarak, was banned from leaving the country and that it would soon lift a detested emergency law, among a number announcements seemingly intended to shore up diminishing support for the armed forces’ council ruling the nation.

…[It decided] that parliamentary elections would be held in September, meeting the demands of some opposition leaders who wanted more time to organize political parties ahead of the poll. Egypt’s presidential election, originally scheduled for August, would also be delayed, but the military did not announce a new date.

The military also announced its imposition of a travel ban on Mubarak, which seems a genuine response to popular sentiment. And it preserved a law banning explicitly religious parties in Egypt.
