Jon Huntsman will speak at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference in June, the coalition announced today.
What Huntsman says will be interesting. The coalition has as their first principle “Respect for the sanctity and dignity of life, family, and marriage as the foundations of a free society,” — a very social conservative stance, although the coalition’s later principles go on to advocate fiscal conservatism as well. While Huntsman’s often touted as a moderate, his pro-life record is strong. On gay rights, he established endorsed civil unions for same-sex couples in Utah, at a time when about 70 percent of Utah residents opposed such unions.
It’ll be interesting to see how Huntsman speaks about social issues at this event, assuming he chooses to do so. Will he emphasize his pro-life values? Argue that civil unions are very different from marriage?
CORRECTION: Huntsman came out in favor of civil unions for same-sex couples in Utah, but he did not establish civil unions. To this day, Utah does not have civil unions for same-sex couples.
