Mitt Romney told reporters today that he will sign the “Cut, Cap and Balance” pledge.
Politicians who sign it promise they will oppose any debt limit increase unless it’s accompanied by substantial spending cuts, spending caps, and the passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment — one that includes a provision requiring a supermajority to hike taxes.
Tim Pawlenty, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum, and Ron Paul have all signed the pledge. Jon Huntsman, who does not intend to sign any pledges while running, said he will not.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R., S.C.) told CNN Sunday that Huntsman’s refusal to sign the pledge meant DeMint could not consider supporting him.
Romney spent today on Capitol Hill, visiting seven senators including Mike Lee (R., Utah), Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.) and Orrin Hatch (R., Utah).
