While average families are buckling down and watching every last dollar, some people continue to live in a world blissfully detached from grim economic reality. Among the members of this elevated class are politicians, celebrities — and the Kardashian clan. But even if we can’t all be celebrities (or even Kardashians), we can at least gawk at Kim’s wedding extravaganza last week. So let’s.
I don’t know about you, readers, but on the wedding invitations I receive, recommended attire is listed simply as either “Black tie” or “Black tie optional.” There are no specific instructions beyond that. So you can imagine my surprise when I heard that all guests at the Kim Kardashian / Kris Humphries nuptials were required to purchase either a white or a black outfit for the ceremony.

But let’s leave that aside for the moment and move on to the not one, not two, but three ivory gowns Ms. Kardashian felt were necessary to complete her wedding experience. Now, I won’t begrudge a bride a costume change (or two — don’t they occur at every wedding? I could be wrong). But I am also fairly sure that all three of Kim’s gowns were made by somebody named Vera Wang. So too were the bridesmaids’ dresses worn by Kim’s infamous sisters.

In a flourish usually reserved for nobility, Kim also had a tiara custom-crafted for her, replete with a large selection of sparkly diamonds. But don’t let it be said that Kim kept all the bling to herself. There was a very large cross at the altar (because when we think of Kardashian, we think of piety) studded with Swarovski crystals. What recession?
Ever the fashionista, Kim had a custom cake created to match the black and white attire of the guests. It measured a whopping six feet in height and came with a $20,000 price tag. Another way of saying that is that the cake cost 5,195 gallons of premium gasoline. But who’s counting?

If you haven’t seen the wedding photos yet (they were sold exclusively to People magazine), don’t fret. This blessed event of faith, hope, and love is ticketed for an E! Entertainment Television special, to air in October. Interestingly enough, guests interviewed after the wedding commented that the awkward affair felt as if it was being done entirely for the cameras. Of course. Kim poses for the TV cameras every day, so why not on her Special Day ®?
