The Romney campaign continues to focus on Rick Perry’s position on Social Security, sending out statements from four Florida politicians (who have all endorsed Mitt Romney) expressing concern about Perry’s views on Social Security.
“Rick Perry has said that he wants Social Security to go back to the states,” said Rep. Connie Mack (R., Fla.). “Given the challenging budgetary situation many states are already in, his plan could put retirees and near-retirees in an even more precarious position. Would states like Florida have to choose between honoring our promises to seniors and paying for education and public safety?”
“Social Security is a contract the American people have made with the federal government,” said Rep. Tom Rooney (R., Fla.) “The federal government needs to honor this contract.”
State senator John Thrasher expressed doubt that moving Social Security to the state level would be “feasible,” while state senator Anitere Flores dives into scare tactics: “If Florida faces a budget shortfall, will seniors fail to receive the Social Security benefits they have earned?”
