Two straight men got married to win free rugby tickets from a radio station, and they don’t see why everyone thinks it’s such a big deal.
Both conservatives and gay-rights activists have called the marriage a mockery, but Matt McCormick and Travis McIntosh firmly believe that winning a trip to see New Zealand play in the 2015 Rugby World Cup is definitely a good enough reason to get married.
“Trav and I bleed Black, so it was never a matter of wanting to enter, it was a matter of how we were going to win,” said 24-year-old McCormick, according to an article posted on the website of The Edge, the radio station that hosted the contest.
McCormick said that he and McIntosh, 23, met at a rugby club when he was six years old. He said both of their families accept the marriage.
But not everyone feels that way.
“Something like this trivializes what we fought for,” said Neill Ballantyne, coordinator of a Queer Support. “The competition promoted the marriage of two men as something negative, as something outrageous that you’d never consider.”
The radio contest was open only to straight males, and more than 200 “bromances” applied.
