David Brock’s shameless, reflexive defense of Hillary Clinton was too much for even an MSNBC panel to handle.
Brock appeared on Morning Joe on Tuesday to discuss Peter Schweizer’s upcoming book Clinton Cash, which asserts that foreign donors to the Clinton Foundation received favors while she was at the State Department. Media Matters, the Brock-run attack-dog organization for the Clintons, rapidly put together a 7,000-word report on Monday looking to discredit Schweizer, prompting co-host Mika Brzezinski to ask Brock how he knows whether the book’s claims are legitimate or not if it is yet to be released and he has not yet read it. Brock conceded that he hadn’t read it yet, before nevertheless proceeding to try and discredit it.

Brock attacked Schweizer’s credibility, citing his potential political ties to groups with connections to Senator Ted Cruz (R., Texas) and the Koch brothers to call into question his motivation for going after Clinton. (The hypocrisy seemed lost on Brock, who has been involved in a number of left-leaning political groups supporting Clinton and recently brought a number of Clinton insiders, including James Carville and Karen Finney, to Media Matters.) Brock went on to decry that the book was being published by HarperCollins, which he flagged as being part of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. empire. Moments later though, that link didn’t seem to matter as Brock cited an investigation into Clinton’s time at State by the News Corp.-owned Wall Street Journal to defend the former secretary.
Later, when panelist Mark Halperin asked Brock if he was more interested in going after Schweizer than the facts of the new book, Brock indirectly answered his question: He pulled up a previous book by Schweizer about the Disney Corporation and called it “anti-gay.” Brock said Schweizer’s work was “a political put-up job, and I can smell it a mile away.” Anyone skeptical of Clinton’s actions should check her records, he added.

“But we kind of can’t because what should be in the public record, or at least viewed by the State Department, has been scrubbed,” an exasperated Brzezinski shot back. Brock then retreated to the oft-used talking point that Clinton has turned over more than 55,000 pages of e-mails — which she selected herself from the now-destroyed server — and chided Brzezinski for employing a “double standard” against her.
#related#Brzezinski didn’t buy it, and the two went back and forth, as Brock continued to make clear his inability to imagine any sort of questionable behavior on Clinton’s part, and persisted in trying to shift the conversation back to Schweizer.
“Are we going to do this again?” Brzezinski asked, referring to previous appearances on the show in which Brock shamelessly defended Clinton.
“No — we’ve done this before,” said co-host Joe Scarborough, perhaps recognizing the futility inherent in trying to knock Brock off-message.
