If we don’t know how crazy they are (and they really are), then we can’t fight them.
What a time to launch NR’s 2018 Fall Webathon.
I don’t know if you know this or not, but there’s a lot of crazy out there these days.
If you’ve been reading my pieces for National Review Online, then you probably have an idea about some of it. You probably know, for example, that students and faculty at California State University, Long Beach, have suggested that any and all human-based mascots might be too offensive.
You probably know that the word “problematic” was recently declared to be in itself problematic.
You probably know that an animal-crackers box was recently slammed for not doing anything to dismantle capitalism.
You’d also know that the insanity goes far beyond just those three examples. Far from it. You’d know that skinny eyebrows have recently been declared cultural appropriation, that a feminist group claimed that postcards with pictures of butts on them “normalize violence against women,” and that a bathing-suit ad was deemed “sexist” because it featured a picture of a woman in a bathing suit. The list goes on and on.
Now, you might think that having to write about these sort of subjects all of the time would be enough to make anyone crazy. Sometimes, I might even say that you’re right. Overall, though, I really enjoy it — because I know that it’s so important. There are people on the left who are doing all that they can to make our culture completely ridiculous, and I know how important it is to reveal these things, and how important NR and its writers are when it comes to reporting on the cultural mayhem.
After all, if we don’t know what’s going on, then there’s no way for us to fight against it.
Yes . . . I love that National Review Online is a place where I can expose and mock this kind of lunacy — and I really love getting to see my pieces alongside work from exceptional political analysts such as Rich Lowry and Charles Cooke.
